Planning Your Elopement

You’re One Step Closer to Planning the Elopement of Your Dreams!

Step 1:

Deciding to Have a Destination Elopement

LARGE, FORMAL WEDDINGS HAVE BEEN THE NORM FOR SO LONG THAT IT’S NOT ALWAYS EASY TO BREAK AWAY FROM THE TRADITIONAL.

There are so many reasons to elope instead of having a conventional wedding. Couples are embracing the freedom to choose what is the best decision for themselves and realizing that they don’t have to go the traditional route if they don’t want to. Eloping allows you to shape the day (or even multiple days) around what’s most important to the two of you. With a more intimate ceremony, you can truly take in and enjoy every minute of your wedding without external distractions or stress.

Should you invite guests to your elopement?

This is often a major sticking point for couples when they’re debating if an elopement is the way to go. For some, the answer is much easier than others due to interpersonal dynamics (family politics can be no joke). Some couples decide to do the best of both worlds: a private elopement followed by a larger reception (this could be in the same location, the day following, or back home at a later date). Others decide to invite immediate family and friends, still keeping it intimate, and sneaking off for a portion of the day to get solo portraits. Either way, it’s up to you both to decide what’s best for your celebration, but if you want any outside feedback, Lisa can share the   – both as a photographer and also as a former bride!

Step 2:

How to Choose Your Elopement Photographer

It’s important to connect with both the images AND the person behind the lens! You should dig into portfolios to ensure their style matches what you envision, as well as making sure you’re a personality match. After all, you’re going to be spending a lot of time with this person. You not only want to be able to trust them to capture your day and make you look your best, but they should also make you feel totally at ease around the camera. In the end, this comfort in front of the lens will make the whole process, including the final photographic result, the best it can possibly be!

It’s also helpful to know how experienced they are with photographing elopements vs traditional weddings – they’re totally different beasts! Elopement photography requires knowledge of the permitting process (which can be a total bureaucratic nightmare), comfort in the outdoors in unpredictable scenarios, as well as an understanding of how to design timelines and coordinate logistics for adventurous activities. A “show up and shoot” mentality definitely doesn’t apply here. Elopement-specific photographers will provide invaluable expertise from start to finish to ensure your day goes smoothly!

Step 3:

How to Decide Where to Elope

Your location will determine almost every other decision you make moving forward – from when to elope, which vendors to hire, how to pick your attire, and what to budget for everything. While some people may know exactly where they want to elope, others need a bit more assistance to lock down that perfect spot.

First off, think about the general place where you want to get married. Do you want a location that has a deeper meaning or connection within your relationship? Or do you simply want a stunning backdrop to say your vows? Destination or local? New or familiar? The two of you should consider these questions together, right from the start.

Next, it’s time to narrow it down a bit further by the actual type of environment that you’re both into. Are you all about sandy beaches? What about a lush forest and/or dramatic mountains? Does an expansive desert sound up your alley? Or perhaps you’re more into an urban celebration? Also, if you have a specific date already in mind, you will want to consider how the season/weather may impact your plans.

Once you’ve determined the type of environment, the next questions are all about the types of activities you’d like to partake in on your elopement day. Are you open to exploring and hiking to reach the perfect spot? Or do you want it to be easily accessible without a lot of physical work involved? Think about what you would enjoy most – if you’re not typically into a lot of outdoor exertion, this may not be the best time to push it. However, if you love to hit the backcountry to reach areas that are off the beaten path, then you’re likely more willing to put in a little work on your wedding day.

This is when Lisa’s knowledge and expertise really come into play. Based on everything you’ve decided thus far, she’ll come up with a specific list of options that fit all your desired criteria. Huzzah!

Step 4:

Selecting Your Elopement Date

Ok, you’ve officially settled on a place, so now it’s time to think about when to elope. Different times of year are more ideal for different types of landscapes and activities. For example, you likely don’t want to elope in Joshua Tree in the middle of the summer when it can reach 110+ degrees, and while a snowy mountain range is gorgeous, some areas may become inaccessible during a February blizzard. If a dreamy sunset is your goal, it’s important to note that there’s often heavy coastal fog along the California coast in the spring.

Obviously, it’s impossible to predict the weather no matter the time of year, but Lisa’s here to help you pick the date when you’re most likely to get the conditions you desire. Once that’s settled, she’ll work out the timing so you get the absolute best lighting for your ceremony and photos!

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN SELECTING YOUR DATE:

What activities would you like to do? Are they season-specific?

Will you or any of your guests have discomfort in certain weather conditions/temperatures?

Are you ok having a backup plan for inclement weather?

Eloping In Bad Weather

Unfortunately, there’s always the risk of weather that’s less than ideal. Once you’ve decided on a location, you’ll review potential issues that could arise based on the season and discuss potential day-of backup plans accordingly. If your elopement is scheduled during a stormy season, you’ll receive updates as conditions develop, as well as a suggested packing list of things that may come in handy depending on the forecast (skin-toned leggings to layer, waterproof hiking boots, clear umbrellas, extra sunscreen and water, gloves and scarves, etc.).

These days, July through October is considered the worst part of “fire season” in the Western US. California, Colorado, Arizona, Oregon and Washington have all suffered from blazes that start earlier and spread further each year. Some areas are more likely to be at risk than others, so you’ll want to keep this in mind when selecting your location, which may require having a comprehensive backup travel plan in place.

Elopements aren’t canceled or postponed due to less-than-ideal weather unless it’s too dangerous to travel and/or be outdoors so please pick your location and date accordingly!

Step 5:

Choosing Your Elopement Activities

Just because you’re eloping, your celebration doesn’t have to be cut short! Think about a traditional wedding – it’s a day-long affair. Starting with getting ready, where you hangout and relax with your wedding party, followed by a first look, formal portraits of your close family and friends, the ceremony, cocktail hour, grand entrance, speeches, dinner, live music, dancing to a DJ… it’s an (exhausting) nonstop event in honor of your marriage.

You and your partner deserve the full wedding experience (minus the awkward small talk with that great aunt you barely know). Your elopement isn’t just a photoshoot that starts and ends with the ceremony and a few pictures following! There’s so much you can do to make your experience together even more special and personalized to your interests.

Some potential scenarios:

THE COLORADO ROCKY MOUNTAINS:

A pre-sunrise hike to your ceremony spot so you can watch the sun fill the sky together while saying your vows, followed by brunch at a cute café. Then the two of you hit the hot tub at your adorable Airbnb A-Frame to soak your tired legs. The afternoon is spent playing lawn games, enjoying some local craft beer, and facetiming with family and friends. Dinner is fully catered and set up by a romantic fire outside, which keeps you both warm and the bugs away. As the sun sets, you put on the playlist you guys curated just for tonight and have your first dance under the stars.

SEDONA, ARIZONA:

An early morning hot air balloon ride lands in a field far from town where you’re picked up by a 4×4 Jeep to reach your ceremony spot. Vows complete, you enjoy a perfectly styled picnic featuring the charcuterie board of your dreams, champagne and some quiet time together. The jeep then returns and drives you to hard to reach, vibrantly-hued canyons, cliffs and trails. After some exploration and photos, you take a refreshing plunge into a crystal-clear river. Cooled off and happily worn out, you throw on some casual clothes and return to your hotel for a nap before your romantic dinner downtown.

BIG SUR, CA:

A cliffside lunch with a breathtaking view at Nepenthe gets you two in the mood for a special day from start to finish. On your way back to your rustic cabin, you stop to hike around and explore the dramatic coastline, grabbing a famous cookie from Big Sur Bakery to give you a boost of sugar-based energy. After getting ready for the ceremony, you have a first look outside your cabin, alongside the river. Late afternoon light filters through the trees as we make our way to the ceremony site amidst the redwoods. A violinist plays as you walk toward your officiant together and also sees you off once the ceremony is complete. The sun is low in the sky as you head to the beach to get some epic sunset photos and have a romantic champagne toast as the day turns to night.

Your Elopement + Leave No Trace

As a passionate believer in protecting and preserving our environment, Pretty/Bold Photography practices Leave No Trace with her clients. This essentially means that for each session, it’s important to leave the landscape in the same condition (or better) than it was found. Going off-trail in sensitive growth areas, improperly discarding waste, interfering with wildlife, and bringing in non-native plant species can have a major negative impact on the wilderness. Luckily, it’s not that hard to avoid doing these things with proper planning and awareness! Check out Leave No Trace for more info!

Step 6:

Finding Elopement Vendors that Match Your Style

Because this day is all about you, it’s important to find vendors who match your style, click with your personalities and have the experience to make your dream elopement a reality.

When you first start planning how you envision your day coming together, one way to develop your vision is to create a Pinterest board that the two of you can both contribute to. That way the process is collaborative from the onset, ensuring there are no miscommunications or confusions along the way. Pinterest is such a great way to explore all of your options and start narrowing things down, which will help keep you from getting overwhelmed as you’re looking to hire specific vendors.

Eloping with Your Dog

As a dog lover, it’s always VERY exciting when someone wants to bring along their puppers to be a part of the day! They’re a part of your family, and it’s so great that you want to incorporate them in your elopement…especially if you get them a little canine tuxedo.

However, you’ll want to consider a few things before fully committing. First: does the location allow dogs? For example, some national parks and forests don’t allow dogs on the trails or left behind in vehicles – so this could greatly limit your location options. Second: What’s your dog’s general disposition? Is he relaxed and comfortable around strangers? Or does he get anxiety and tend to act out, which will then cause you both a bit of stress when he’s a total jerk? If your dog is well-behaved and the area allows it, definitely bring him along! Also, if you’re having guests attend, they can be put on pooch patrol so you don’t have to worry about him as much.
