As someone who eloped myself, I know how hard it can be to figure out the logistics when planning an elopement. Hopefully blog post will help you navigate how to create an unforgettable elopement experience in Yosemite that will leave you and your partner in awe!

But before jumping into all of the details, here’s a quick list of general tips I share with all of my clients who are planning a Yosemite elopement:

• Pick a time when the park is less crowded. Sunrise is the only time of day to avoid the large crowds in most areas of the park. Some areas get busy earlier than others, so plan your photos accordingly!
• Summer can be absolutely insane with traffic and visitors, so whenever possible, I suggest planning for dates that avoid mid-June through August.
• Choose a ceremony spot that is special to you, and if you have a group size that requires a designated site, make sure to get your permit application in as early as possible!
• There are areas in the park with little to no cell phone reception, so make sure to download your maps in advance!
• Wear proper footwear, bring layers for temperature changes, and pack water, snacks, sunscreen and bug spray.
• Hire a photographer who is experienced with navigating Yosemite and understands all of the potential issues that can arise when planning an elopement there (Hi, it’s me!)

Yosemite National Park is a place of unparalleled beauty and offers endless opportunities to make your elopement day extraordinary. There’s a reason it’s one of the most popular places to elope in the United States. Imagine exchanging vows against the backdrop of Half Dome or capturing stunning photos at Tunnel View, walking amongst the giant sequoias, or marveling at the rush of water beneath Yosemite Falls. There really is nowhere else that can offer so many different backdrops all within a single park!

Located in the Sierra Nevada mountains in eastern California, Yosemite is home to a variety of landscapes, including forests, meadows, rivers, and mountains. Yosemite is also where you’ll find several iconic landmarks, such as Half Dome and Yosemite Falls. There are three main areas most couples consider when planning their Yosemite elopement: Yosemite Valley, Wawona, and Tuolumne Meadows. Each of these areas will be covered in more detail further on in the blog.

Planning a Yosemite elopement may seem overwhelming at first, but with the right resources and guidance, it can be a smooth and easy process!

3. Have a friend or family member serve as your officiant. A ceremony led by someone you know can add a special and personalized touch to your elopement.

Personally, I’ve been dying to photograph a couple who float down the Merced River during their elopement!
7. Stargazing: Yosemite is renowned for its dark skies, making it the perfect place for stargazing.
8. Picnic in the meadows: Yosemite’s meadows provide a serene and picturesque setting for a romantic picnic. Pack a gourmet lunch or hire a catering service to create a memorable dining experience for you and your partner.

The first step is to decide on the date for your elopement. Yosemite experiences different seasons throughout the year, each offering its own unique charm. Choosing the right time of year for your Yosemite elopement is crucial to ensure favorable weather conditions and the best experience possible.

Each season in Yosemite offers its own unique charm and opportunities:

Spring, from April to June, is a time of renewal in Yosemite. The waterfalls are at their peak, and the meadows are filled with colorful wildflowers. The temperatures are generally mild, but there may still be some lingering snow at higher elevations. During this time, you may encounter controlled burns as the park purposely creates and monitors small fires to decrease the chances of a larger wildfire outbreak. Depending on winter snowfall, Glacier Road typically opens back up in late May-early June, which allows access to the iconic elopement backdrops of Glacier Point and Taft Point.

Summer, from July to September, is the busiest time in Yosemite. The days are long and warm, perfect for exploring the park’s many trails and viewpoints. However, be prepared for crowds and limited availability of certain services. August is also often the start of fire season, which can go through October, so you’ll want to consider a backup plan if the park is inaccessible.

Fall, from October to November, brings cooler temperatures and vibrant autumn colors. The park is less crowded, allowing for a more intimate elopement experience. It’s a great time for hiking and enjoying the peaceful beauty of Yosemite. It’s often around November that Glacier Road and access to Tioga Pass close due to snowfall.

Winter, from December to March, transforms Yosemite into a winter wonderland. Snow blankets the landscape, creating a magical atmosphere. However, winter conditions can be challenging, with road closures and limited services. If you choose to elope in winter, be prepared for colder temperatures and potential weather-related complications.

Yosemite National Park is vast, spanning over 750,000 acres. With so much natural beauty to explore, it’s essential to choose the perfect location for your elopement. Some popular ceremony spots include Glacier Point, Taft Point, and Yosemite Valley.

Glacier Point offers unparalleled panoramic views of the park’s best known landmarks, including Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, and the High Sierra. Perched atop a sheer granite cliff, you can experience breathtaking sunsets, starry nights, and the sheer magnitude of Yosemite’s natural beauty from this iconic viewpoint.

Taft Point, accessible by a short, mostly easy hike, is a dramatic overlook that provides awe-inspiring views of Yosemite Valley, El Capitan, and Yosemite Falls. From here, you can experience a thrilling perspective of the park’s sheer cliffs and granite formations. And if you aren’t afraid of heights, you can get photos on the iconic precipice overlooking the Valley floor.

Yosemite Valley is known for its towering waterfalls and lush meadows, providing a picturesque setting for your elopement.

Yosemite Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in North America and is known for its majestic beauty and thunderous cascades. Its three distinct tiers offer mesmerizing views from various vantage points throughout the park, providing a spectacular sight that embodies the awe-inspiring power of nature.

El Capitan Meadow is a great place to check out the towering granite monolith of El Capitan against the backdrop of the lush valley floor. This serene and picturesque setting provides a perfect spot for picnics and soaking in the breathtaking scenery of one of Yosemite’s most well-known landmarks.

Cooks Meadow is where you’ll find the iconic boardwalks that allow for photos with Yosemite Falls and Half Dome in the background. The Merced River weaves its way through the meadow and there are pretty beaches and bridges sprinkled throughout.

Sentinel Beach and Cathedral Beach are also popular for elopements, especially those with a larger guest count. Tucked away from the main road, there also offer access to the Merced River and picnic tables if you want to have a little reception or snack in the shade.

There are three different areas where you can walk amongst the majestic sequoias in Yosemite. The most well-known is the Mariposa Grove, which is currently only accessible after a long hike from a lower parking area. The other place to hike to the sequoias is in the Big Oak Flat area, which can close due to snowfall. That’s where you’ll find the Tuolumne Grove and Merced Grove.

When open, Tioga Pass boasts a variety of different areas to explore, including stunning alpine lakes, sprawling meadows, and majestic mountain peaks.

Tenaya Lake is a less frequented but no less stunning spot for elopements. The lake is surrounded by majestic mountains and is accessible by a short hike from the trailhead.

Tuolumne Meadows is a picturesque alpine paradise characterized by vast expanses of lush meadows, crystal-clear streams, and granite peaks.

Olmsted Point is a stunning overlook that offers panoramic views of the iconic granite formations, including Half Dome and Clouds Rest.

Note: Consider the accessibility and availability of your chosen location. Some spots require hiking or may have limited access during certain times of the year. It’s important to plan accordingly and ensure that you and your guests can comfortably reach the ceremony site.

Also, when planning a trip to Yosemite, you need to factor in the drive time between locations, parking issues, and road construction delays. Drive times can vary depending on the starting point, and parking can be difficult to find in the park during peak season. Road construction can also cause delays, so it is important to check the status of roads before heading out.

To have a legal elopement in Yosemite, you will need to obtain the necessary permits and adhere to the park’s regulations. Special use permits are required for ceremonies taking place within the park. These permits help preserve the park’s natural resources and ensure that your elopement doesn’t disrupt other visitors or wildlife.

To obtain a permit, you will need to submit an application to the park’s Special Park Uses office. The application will include details about your ceremony location, date, guest count, and any additional equipment you plan to bring. It’s essential to apply well in advance to secure your preferred date and location. The permit cost is $150 and is nonrefundable once submitted.

Groups with more than 11 people in total (including vendors) will be limited to holding the ceremony in one of their specific wedding sites. These can be reserved for 2 hours but don’t preclude other park visitors from being in the same area during that time. As such, it’s best plan to have your ceremony early in the morning on a weekday and/or during the off-season.

Keep in mind that there may be restrictions on the number of guests, use of amplified music, and other activities. Familiarize yourself with the park’s regulations to ensure a smooth and compliant elopement.
